Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
In this one-time class you will learn how to create a strong, interesting lead character for your screenplay, book, or play.

We will cover:

- What makes a character memorable?
- What do you need to know about your character?
- How do you take an idea in your head about a character and get it onto the page?
- How do you move forward once you have a great character and move forward to outlining their story?

Class Structure:

- We will begin with some easy improv exercises to warm up and free up our minds so the creativity can flow. This can be done with the camera on or off - whatever you're comfortable with!
- Then we will have a group discussion to learn what makes a character great using examples from movies, books, and TV.
- I will then teach my tools via a guided written exercise where students complete a worksheet about their character and develop their character's goal.
- Time to share their work at the end only if they feel comfortable.
- We will go over next steps about how to put their character into a screenplay, book, or play.

What's My Teaching Style?
My classes are fun, engaging, and encouraging. They're not lectures where you listen and then write, rather everyone feels included and part of the process. I've taught writing to students of all ages and I'm able to meet each student where they are minute to minute. I believe every person has a voice and a story to tell and it is truly my pleasure to teach you the tools so you can shine brightly as a writer and creator. My style is to uplift and empower each student with positivity and joy.

How Do Learners Interact with Me?
I do my very best to make each online class feel like we're in person together. Students are welcome to be active in the chat with me and others, ask questions either out loud in class or sending me questions directly via chat. I'll also be giving lectures and guiding group discussions, too. And if anyone wants to share their work in class they will receive positive encouragement from me, too!
Learning Goals
Students will increase their written and verbal communication skills as well as deepen their emotional intelligence through: writing, word choice, character development, and understanding of story.

Students only need a notebook and a pencil or pen. If they're more comfortable typing on a computer or tablet they're welcome to do so (Google docs is also fine) but I do encourage use of pen/paper if they're comfortable doing so.
