Class Experience

One of the most valuable resources a writer can have is a community that provides him or her with instruction, encouragement, and inspiration. This ongoing group will allow students to explore the tools and techniques of creative writing while realizing their own writing skills in a supportive environment.

Each class will begin with a brief lecture on a particular topic which we will discuss as a group. Topics include:

July 23: Descriptive Writing
July 30: The Impact of Setting on a Story
Aug 6: Ensuring Characters Have Depth and Interest
Aug 13: Prop Day

Discussion that is respectful, supportive, and stays on topic is allowed. Students will then be given writing prompts and cues from which they will choose to incorporate in their work followed by an opportunity to write in class. This practice allows them to exercise their creativity with few constraints and driven by their own ideas. They will then share their work which we will discuss as a group. I want students to examine their work in a meaningful way while bolstering the ideas and efforts of their fellow writers.

As this is an inclusive class, all students are welcome. If your student has special abilities or requires accommodations, please let me know.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree from University of South Carolina
I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and young adults within the educational and mental health systems. While in graduate school, I was a part time college instructor which ignited my passion for teaching. I then became a mental health therapist, working in residential facilities as well as the community. For the past three years, I have taught English to students abroad.

Along with being a teacher, I am also a writer. I have had two short stories published, and I continue to regularly submit material. For three years, I had a blog that included my short stories, reviews, and opinions on various issues. Other examples of my writing experience consist of curriculums for an independent living program, program descriptions, numerous website articles, as well as online advertisements. I enjoy sharing my passion for writing with students and hearing about what inspires them. I strive to provide a supportive atmosphere for my students, allowing them to harness and express their creativity in ways unique to them.
