Class Experience

*****Please read the supply list*******

It's Friday the 13th and a black cat just crossed your path! Yikes! Why is the number 13 considered unlucky? Why are black cats unlucky for some, but lucky for others? Superstitions are a part of cultures all around the world. In this one-time class, kids will learn the history and folklore behind the superstitions of black cats, Friday the thirteenth, four-leaf clovers, and saying rabbit! rabbit! for good luck. The kids will be engaged through class discussion of the information presented in a slide show. We will discuss how and why these superstitions began. After our discussion, the kids will create a new superstition, and they will write a short story (paragraph or two) explaining the origin of the new superstition. For example, untied shoes are bad luck. Raining while the sun shines is good luck. During their writing time, the kids will be able to talk with each other and me. To wrap up class, the kids will share their stories with the class if they choose to do so.
