US Grade 6 - 9
*This is a flex version of the creative writing class. No Live Meetings will occur during the 7 weeks* Writing is a great way to begin to express the stories within, whether that's in story form, poetry, or scripts/screenwriting. Stories have been important for all cultures throughout history, in many different ways and forms. They help us relate to one another and shape the culture around us. This class is a great opportunity for students to practice their storytelling and development skills. During this class, we will cover the topics that closely relate to all aspects of the creative writing process that may be considered. The teacher will be uploading videos in the Outschool classroom for students to watch on each topic section to help with student instruction and understanding. There will also be practice guides and assignments for the student to work with. These will help broaden students' understanding of the topics, as well as offer a space for them to ask questions and get feedback from one another. For this class, students will use the Outschool virtual classroom to participate in written discussion with each other, as well as help offer feedback to one another. Each week and activities will build on one another, so the students may get practice writing a complete piece, or practice with different levels of many pieces. During these weekly activities, students will have a chance to upload their ideas and questions into the Outschool classroom, and have opportunity to answer one another's questions or comments, as well as get answers from the teacher. There will be topic discussions and homework updated often to go with different parts of story telling via creative writing. Students will be encouraged to share and offer feedback with each other on ideas, as well as get feedback from the teacher. This will all occur in posts within the Outschool virtual classroom. The topics covered are: Topic 1: Brainstorming - getting ideas, narrowing ideas Topic 2: Characterization - developing characters Topic 3: World Building - how we develop the world in our stories Topic 4: Pre-writing/Outlining - the work we do before we actually write the story Topic 5: Story Sequence - how the story gets put together Topic 6: Drafting - writing your poem/story/script Topic 7: The art of description - writing descriptions that show, not tell Topic 8: The art of dialogue - writing realistic dialogue Topic 9: Editing and revision - how we go back and make changes that make our story better Topic 10: The art of series - planning a series/series bible

Other Details
Parental Guidance
While I do not plan on focusing on any mature material - this is a creative writing class. As such, we will discuss different kinds of literature, different literary stories, different characters, and student stories. I do tailor some of my responses to the students' interests. The stories discussed may include: violence, death, and mystery. None of these issues will be the focus, but they may show up in the class. If you have a learner on the younger range of the class, and have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
