Writing is a great way to begin to express the stories within, whether that's in story form, poetry, or scripts/screenwriting. Stories have been important for all cultures throughout history, in many different ways and forms. They help us relate to one another and shape the culture around us. This class is a great opportunity for students to practice their storytelling and development skills. Stories have been important for different cultures all over the world for centuries. During this class, we will cover the topics that closely relate to all aspects of the creative writing process that may be considered. There will be writing activities for both in class and out of class, giving students opportunities to hone their craft. Each week, activities build on one another, and by the end of the class, the students will have more confidence and foundation for writing their novels. The topics covered are: Topic 1: Brainstorming - getting ideas, narrowing ideas Topic 2: Characterization - developing characters Topic 3: World Building - how we develop the world in our stories Topic 4: Pre-writing/Outlining - the work we do before we actually write the story Topic 5: Story Sequence - how the story gets put together Topic 6: Drafting - writing your poem/story/script Topic 7: The art of description - writing descriptions that show, not tell Topic 8: The art of dialogue - writing realistic dialogue Topic 9: Editing and revision - how we go back and make changes that make our story better Topic 10: The art of series - planning a series/series bible

Other Details
Parental Guidance
While I do not plan on focusing on any mature material - this is a creative writing class. As such, we will discuss different kinds of literature, different literary stories, different characters, and student stories. I do tailor some of my responses to the students' interests. The stories discussed may include: violence, death, and mystery. None of these issues will be the focus, but they may show up in the class. If you have a learner on the younger range of the class, and have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have.
