Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
Beginner Level
In this class learners will produce a new piece of creative writing each week by engaging with a different writing prompt. Writing prompts will vary each week and will be generated through: interactive tasks, games, images, visual props, emotions, genre mashups etc. Each lesson learners will be given a writing technique as a focus that they will learn through lecture, PowerPoint and discussion. Learners will then aim to include or base their writing around this technique. Lessons are stand alone and do not build on previous lessons so learners can join whenever suits them.

Creative writing can take any form so different writing styles will be discussed and encouraged. However, learners are free to write in any style they prefer; the only criteria is that the writing is imaginative! Learners will also get a chance to share their work if they feel comfortable doing so. I am also happy for students to submit their writing if they would like teacher feedback.

The aim of these lessons is to make writing fun and to give learners the tools to develop new skills and a love of writing.

Learners need not have any previous creative writing knowledge as we will cover writing basics such as perspective and structure. Learners will have plenty of time to write independently during the lesson and will also have the opportunity to be guided by myself if required.

Typical class format would be:
- Introduction of writing prompt
- Delivery of learning
- Planning and discussion
- Writing
- Sharing

Learning Goals

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been in education for 19 years and am currently the Assistant Head of Special Educational Needs in a secondary school (students aged 11-16) in the UK. I believe in an inclusive education for all students, no matter their ability or disability.
I teach English, Film and Media, and creativity is at the heart of all the classes I teach.
I was an art technician for three years in which I honed my artistic skills that I will use to offer art based classes.
I also ran my own small baking and cake decorating business for seven years; I even had celebrity clients! So, I hope to offer these classes to students in the near future.
In my spare time I love walking my pug and I am an avid reader of fantasy fiction. I also enjoy running; I have completed several half marathons and my goal is to complete a full marathon some day. I am a big kid at heart so look out for my Pokémon based classes!

I will leave you with one final thought: 'Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.' - Nelson Mandela.
