Description

Class Experience

As the workshop goes on students will get practice in:
•	Organizing their thoughts with pre-writing exercises
•	Reading their work out loud
•	Listening to their peers in an engaged and respectful way
•	Giving articulate, respectful, and helpful feedback to their peers
•	Developing focus and concentration on a task
•	Letting their creative ideas flourish
•	Exciting collaborative engagement with other students
•	Learning elements of novel plot structure
I've taught writing workshops for children and teens since 1992. This type of workshop format is tried and true. It allows students a bit of guidance, but gives them a great deal of creative freedom--the perfect blend for a gifted child. I consistently see student's writing improve over the course of the workshop. I'm consistently amazed at what the gifted learners in my workshop accomplish with this basic format.

ADVANCED learners sometimes don't write well by hand, sometimes don't have good spelling--sometimes struggle to read their own writing, much less read it out loud--but they are still advanced learners. They just need more time and practice writing. In this workshop they are motivated with all the freedom they have to work and create exciting stories. When writing time is fun time--and usually that's almost all it is in this class--then problems shake out of sentences until the child is writing fluid paragraphs they can read with confidence to others.
None.
Students should have access to writing paper and pen for each workshop class. We want to put our inner critic away--it's too easy to erase words on the computer. Tip: have a folder on hand so you can put stories from the workshop together at the end of each day.
Students are keenly aware of their peer's reactions to their work. They know when everyone is listening breathlessly. They know when everyone is excited about their writing. This kind of positive reinforcement of strong writing will encourage students to write at a more challenging level.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Some of the stories used in exercises are old fairy tales which can sometimes be a bit gruesome. I will warn students ahead of time.
