Writers have a place to explore ideas, write stories and experience community in this class. They get a starting point for their next plot point, a consistent time and place to write and support to keep going. The students learn by putting pen to paper (or typing in a document) to practice the writing craft. They receive a prompt and have time to respond then share to learn how one idea has so many possibilities and perspectives. Some exercises are done collectively, such as brainstorming characters and their backgrounds. Students take information and create scenes and people in them to build a story. As they share their progress, students receive real time feedback and encouragement. Instructor questions guide students to flesh out ideas in a student generated manner. Prompt and exercise examples include: Examine this assortment of themed socks. Imagine yourself or a character receiving one as a gift. Describe the person who gave it to you and the occasion. How do you feel about the receiver? What do you think about the gift? Brainstorm with other writers information about a new student at school. Describe their physical features. Create a backstory. Why did they move to this school? What does this person like to do for fun? Separately, write about this person's first lunch in the cafeteria. Then share with the others.
