In choosing this course, students will learn how to effectively write a five-paragraph informative essay about an unsung, African-American heroine or hero. In addition, students will be given a choice in selecting the heroine or hero and will learn how to research information about that person. In an attempt to develop cognitive skills, students will be asked to analyze, critique, and score either their own work, that of a classmate, or both. The critique will be based on a rubric which includes grammar, sentence structure, the accuracy of information, creativity, focus, and excitement. Lesson one will focus on learning how to effectively write an informative essay. Students will review and analyze effective informative essays. Students will learn the requirements and structure of an informative essay. First identifying the heroine or hero to write about, students will learn and develop their research skills. Writing, researching, analyzing, and evaluating are many of the skills necessary to succeed in high school and college. For a homework assignment, students will complete the writing of, at least, one informative essay about a heroine or hero. Lesson two will be about analyzing and critiquing informative essay homework assignments. In an effort to improve their own writing skills, students review and revise their own and/or the work(s) others, depending on student preference.
