In this weekly club for high school and middle school students, participants will develop writing and speaking skills by freewriting to a provided prompt and then sharing a passage from their writing with others in a safe space.

This class is inspired by high school creative writing clubs I've taught in New York City and Central New York. In this class, students will be asked to Freewrite for 20 minutes. A Freewrite is when you try your best to write (or type) without stopping. If you can't think of what to write, then you write "I can't think of what to write" until something comes to your mind. By engaging in sustained, consistent writing to numerous tasks, students will develop their craft, gain confidence, and find new sources for creative inspiration. By sharing their writing and offering feedback, students will develop their skill set as public speakers and active participants in a learning community.
I have over 10 years of experience teaching writing, literature, history, public speaking, philosophy, and music in New York City and Central New York. My focus involves utilizing learner interests in order to develop skills in writing, speaking, critical thinking, agency, and digital literacy. I have a B.A. in Philosophy, a B.A. in Secondary Education English, an M. Ed. in Teaching and Learning, and professional teaching certification in New York State for English Language Arts, grades 7-12. Additionally, I'm a published poet and songwriter.
Something to write with: pen & paper, Google Docs, Word. Your choice!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
