Are you ready for your learner to have fun with writing and learn at the same time? Come explore this weekly writing class as we make writing a positive experience! The course will run for a whole semester but you can join in any time and stay for as long as you'd like! I have worked on developing a course designed around picture prompts for creative writing after having such positive feedback on my other writing courses, Pencil Pack and Little Learners. Those classes help to encourage and foster pleasant writing experiences around a weekly theme. Now it's time to get creative using a weekly surprise picture! This course will have a weekly pictures to help students think about creating a sentence(s) or a small, short story. The class will focus on sentence basics, like using capital letters and punctuation properly, but also on helping students expand their ideas and writing. We will work each week on thinking about what words we can add to provide more detail and really stretch our writing. Each week we will have a surprise picture prompt to serve as the springboard for our writing. As an experienced and licensed teacher, I have selected pictures that kids will enjoy such as animals, pirates/princesses, and more that will allow students to create a writing based on the image. All images will be age-appropriate. I will also provide a word box to help students with spelling words that may be used in their writing. If you would like to know more specifics on the pictures or have questions about the picture topics, please message me. We’ll begin each class by meeting our learners with a starter question (icebreaker) and then brainstorm ideas together for our weekly picture. Depending on the ages and size of the class each week, we may use breakout rooms to brainstorm in groups. It’s a great way to practice oral language skills as well as practicing active listening and social skills. Next, we’ll have time to write about the picture as I work with individual students on spelling, grammar, and other writing skills. Writing topics may be related to parts of speech as well as elements of stories (characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end). The class will be structured so I have time to speak with each child 1:1 to check in on their writing and mechanics. During this time, I will be differentiating for individual strengths and weaknesses. Some students may compose 1 or two sentences whereas others may create a simple, short story. No matter your child’s skill level, every learner will be able to write based on the picture prompt. As the class concludes, we’ll have time for our writers to share their work. All students will be encouraged to share, but it is not required. This sharing aspect of the class is important so learners can share their writing and others can practice good listening as we hear all the wonderful writings we’ve created. If you’d like me to review your child’s work and provide feedback, families can send me their child’s work. Additionally, I will send 1 additional picture after our class so families who may want their child to continue writing during the week can use the picture. It is an optional activity, but meant to provide families a way to extend their work. Sometimes families are looking for supplemental activities that can accompany their learning. If completed, families can send the work to me for review. I hope your child can join in our weekly writing class for lots of fun, writing, and social interaction! All your child will need is paper or a notebook and a pencil or writing tool of their choice! Please see the sections listed to enroll. If you do not see a section that is conducive to your schedule, please message me and I can work to find a time that works for both our schedules. NOTE: This class is set up as an ongoing class, which means it’s a weekly class that can be joined in at any time. Lessons do not build on each other, but rather follow the same structure each week based around the picture prompt. Learners can pick and choose the weeks that work for them, or just join us once. The current schedule for sections beginning in August will run until the end of November. However, more classes can be added to carry into December, if need for consistent school routine. And finally, if you are part of a homeschool group, learning co-op, charter school, or other learning group and would like your group to be in a class together, please message me. I am able to create a class with just your group at no additional charge.
