Creative Writing Class 1

In this 6-week course, students will develop the necessary skills to confidently and compellingly write a short fictional story. Each week, we will discuss a different aspect of short-story writing and implement it into an ongoing story that the learners will write on their own. Being that this is also an English class, the teacher will read over (or otherwise check) students' writing samples to provide spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other general writing corrections, as well as overall feedback of the story's content. 
The class structure will begin with a short introduction at the beginning of that day's topic, some examples and group discussion of that topic (to generate ideas), and then a writing portion to put the topic to use. The writing section of the class will be the longest, usually around 20 to 30 minutes, with time afterward for students to share what they have written and provide each other with feedback. Students, as such, will interact with myself and each other a good deal throughout class. 
The format of each week is as follows:
Week 1 - Character Development: What makes a character relatable, interesting, and realistic? We will discuss these topics and create a character and their antagonist to use over the course of the next 6 weeks. 
Week 2 - Relationships and Dialogue: What other characters might exist aside from the main characters? We will talk about how to use character relationships to help build the world around the story and give the reader opportunities to get to know the characters more intimately. 
Week 3 - World Building: Where does this story take place? How do we craft a simple yet effective world for our characters to inhabit? We will discuss this issue in order to feel confident about the setting of our story. 
Week 4 -  Conflict: What is conflict? Why is it important for a story? We will weave conflict into our story to ensure that it continues to be energized and intriguing. 
Week 5 - Revelations: How can we surprise both ourselves and the reader? We will discuss using surprises and plot twists in order to keep the reader guessing and therefore more interested in the story. 
Week 6 - Climax and Resolution: How do we end our story memorably? We will find out the most effective way to finish our stories and leave the reader satisfied with the end result.
