Writing a good story often requires creativity and natural-born talent. Writing an excellent story requires an understanding of key elements of the craft. In this camp, students will explore several key components to writing a great story. Students will also receive feedback on stories they choose to submit. Day 1: Writing warm-up How to construct a well-developed setting The importance of understanding your genre Activity - Complete a story brainstorming worksheet using Google Docs HOMEWORK: Work on a new story or work on revising a current story Day 2: Writing warm-up Types of characters (Protagonist, antagonist, etc...) How to create realistic characters Activity - Complete a character map using Google Docs HOMEWORK: Work on your story Day 3: Writing warm-up How to add details to immerse the reader into the story When to show and when to tell Activity - Work on story and ask questions/receive feedback HOMEWORK: Work on your story Day 4: Writing warm-up Tips for creating dialogue Examine effective and ineffective dialogue Activity - Work on story and ask questions/receive feedback HOMEWORK: Finish up story. Students have the option to submit their stories for feedback.
