Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 3
Do you love stories and using your imagination? In this two day creative writing camp we will get new ideas and inspiration as we work on writing short stories together.

Day 1: Story characters & the setting
Ideas for story characters are all around us! I will introduce the class to a few of my favorite story characters and we will brainstorm more characters together. We will briefly talk about story settings and will start writing the beginning of our story.

Day 2: Problems & Solutions
A problem in a story can be serious or completely silly! Thinking of the problems and solutions that our characters face can help us to develop the main storyline. We will brainstorm ideas for problems and solutions and then add to our stories.

Both days will include:
Group brainstorming
Time to write independently
Opportunities to share work

Learners can add to the same story over both days or work on a new story in each class.

During independent writing time, I will check in, providing support as needed. I also encourage learners to help each other. I find that when children are part of a community of authors/illustrators, they inspire each other to try out new ideas.

Learners may not complete their whole story during class, but the goal is for everyone to get started with their creative writing project, so they feel motivated to continue with story writing after the class ends.

Learning Goals

The overarching goal of this class is to spark children's excitement for using their current literacy skills in playful and meaningful ways both in class and afterward at home. I believe that learning to read and write is a process that develops gradually with support, time, and authentic opportunities to use their developing skills. The class is designed to support the child in their current stage of development, to inspire them to use their current skills in new ways and to help them to try out new ways to expressing story ideas through drawing and/or writing.

I have a Master's degree in early childhood and inclusive education with an emphasis on literacy. My love for creative writing started when I was a child and continues today. I have been an educator for 20 years and am passionate about teaching literacy skills that support a lifelong love of reading and writing. Storytelling and creative writing are some of my favorite ways to support literacy development. I see all children as capable individuals who are motivated to learn when their interests are honored and they are encouraged to make their own discoveries.
