Class Experience

In this camp, learners will learn how to extend their writing and engage their reader by learning a new technique and applying it within their writing based on a prompts they choose. All skill levels are welcome!

Each session will begin with a short lesson on the day's topic. Learners will be encouraged to try to use what they learned from the lesson in their own writing that day. After the lesson, learners will be given a variety of writing prompts to choose from (or learners can to choose their own topic) to begin their writing. Learners can choose to write on paper or using a computer or other device. As learners write, the teacher will interact individually with each learner to clarify, provide examples, support the writing process, and extend the learner's skills. At times, the teacher may provide opportunities to learners to work with one another to offer peer feedback and/or create a co-written piece. At the end of the camp, learners will have the opportunity to share one of their completed writing pieces with the class, if desired.

Day 1: Adding Sensory Details and Showing vs. Telling

My Philosophy:
“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”- Aristotle

I hope to not only empower all of my students to learn the content and skills necessary to be successful in school, but to also provide them with a safe, respectful learning environment and the support they need to be successful in life.

I believe that children learn best through individualized instruction, teacher modeling, and guided or independent practice. I use small, flexible groupings that are leveled according to students' linguistic needs, reading abilities, math skills, and/or interests.

All students bring different educational and personal experiences to a learning environment. Educators must be able to integrate these experiences and perspectives into their teaching and their students learning. This integration creates more holistic learners who are more inclined to continue learning. Teaching cannot simply be a way to feed information to students, but rather a way to fuel a student to create change and inspire others.
