Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Students will meet every day over the course of the week. Each day will focus on a different technique to enhance their creative writing skills. They will also be given a writing prompt with which to use to try out their new skills. At the end of the week, students will be encouraged to share their favorite writing prompt from the week and talk with each other about the other students' writing.

Skills covered during this week will include: writing good descriptions (showing, not telling), narrative perspective, poetry, and writing dialogue. Each skill will be covered via instruction, examples, and a prompt to help students practice. We will cover each of these topics once during the week, for a total of the five days.

Each class will start with instruction on what the writing skill of the day is, examples of the skill in other texts, and end with a prompt. Students will be given time to get started on the prompt every day in class, though some may need or want to continue working on it after the live class has ended.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their creative writing skills.

Indiana Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education
Hello! My name is Mrs. Henry, and I am a licensed secondary English teacher. I have taught 7-12 grade in a traditional classroom setting for the past 9 years. My repertoire of taught classes includes 7th-8th grade Language Arts, Accelerated Language Arts, 9th grade English, and high school creative writing (the curriculum for this class I designed myself!). I have also led a creative writing club as well as a writing lab.

Creative writing and British Literature are subjects I am most passionate about, but I'm in this field because I love all aspects of it: grammar, formal writing, literature, creative writing, and informational text. I would love to teach you about poetry, help you fine tune a story you're working on, lead you through the process of a research paper, deepen your understanding of grammar and semantics, or discuss the fine details of your favorite book. I love helping students through any part of the writing process as well as the rich discussions that come from digging in deep to a story or text.
