Students learn how to write a novel from a published YA novelist. Submit to the Scholastic Novel Writing Awards in the fall. They can write fantasy, realistic fiction, sci-fi, video game stories, thrillers, whatever they like. 

In this intensive class, you'll write every day, learning all key skills from plotting to character development to worldbuilding to literary devices. You won't get stuck, and you'll build your creative confidence and writing skills.

We'll discuss POV, verb tense, and creating gripping first pages. We'll also talk about plotting the first scenes: the establishing scene and the inciting incident. You'll write your first pages in class. 

Literary focus: similes and metaphors with voice and personality.

Assignment: Write your first chapter, or your next one if it's your second camp. Please send me your first 1-3 pages. 

Decisions for Your First Pages and Chapters

You'll learn how to add these important tension tools: foreshadowing, hooks, scene questions, scene goals, and obstacles.

Literary focus: Lighting imagery and onomatopoeia (sounds) to build suspense.

Tension, Suspense, Action Scenes

We'll look at conflicting goals for all characters and how to design perfect obstacles for your protagonist based on their internal struggles.

Assignment: Finish your third chapter. Watch the videos. Send me up to your first ten pages. 

Goals, Obstacles, and Reactions

Today, we will work on further building your world, as well as multi-sensory writing and literary devices, using examples from your favorite books and your first pages - alliteration, similes, metaphors, repetition, personification. 

Assignment: Finish your fourth chapter. Watch the videos. 

If you want, put a link for your book in the classroom for positive, encouraging feedback from the other writers. 

Using All the Senses, World-Building

We'll look at common mistakes people make regarding storytelling and their writing. You'll also brainstorm ideas for your next four chapters. 

Assignment: Finish your fifth or next chapter, watch videos on common mistakes, and do the dialogue worksheet if you make many dialogue punctuation mistakes. 

Plotting , Avoiding Common Writing Mistakes

We'll look at how to show your characters' strengths, weaknesses, past memories, thoughts, wisdom, and growth. All characters react based on these factors. 

Assignment: Finish your next chapter. Watch the videos. 

Character Development, Motivations and Reactions, Body Language

Your characters are going to struggle against something external or their fears or insecurities, often a combination of both. How can you show this to build the reader's sympathy?

Assignment: Finish your chapter and watch videos. Send me your next ten pages. Last chance to get feedback!! I will read it and send you a message about what I love and what to improve. 

Internal and External Conflict

We'll talk about beautiful literary devices and I'll celebrate your fabulous sentences.
