US Grade 8 - 11
Is your young writer starting to develop their fictional worlds, such as a fantastical imagining of a world with dragons and ancient lore, a post-apocalyptic dystopia where governmental mandates and societal expectations limit freedoms and personal expression, or a more realistic world that looks much like our own? Maybe they're struggling to make it well-defined or could just use a little more help rounding it out. If that's the case, this class is for you! In this 6-week class, we will create a mindmap and vision boards, as well as complete other activities in order to build students' imaginary worlds for their stories. Each week's focus will help students methodically decide on the landscape and architecture, rules and laws, environment, culture and language, and history of their worlds. All of these aspects will help make their worlds vivid and believable. Students will be able to share what they came up with in each class in the last 10 minutes of the class meeting. While assignments are individual, I will also encourage collaboration among the learners. COURSE OUTLINE: Week 1: Landscape & Architecture - Create and add to the mindmap, as well as create a vision board Week 2: Rules and Laws - Add to the mindmap and create a list of all the rules and laws of the land (questions will be provided to help with this) Week 3: Environment - Add to the mindmap and create a vision board that depicts the environment Week 4: Culture & Language - Add to the mindmap and create a vision board that depicts the culture Week 5: History - Add to the mindmap and create a narrative that reveals the history of this world (questions will be provided to help with this) Week 6: Putting It All Together - Write a scene that shows all of this in action (students will share their scenes after class)
