Class experience

US Grade 3 - 9
Students learn to write in complete sentences and develop strong paragraphs. As they read the story back to me they also develop speaking skills, confidence, and voice inflections adaptive to the story's setting and plot. It sometimes becomes a bit of a fun acting class!
I have a master's degree, am semi-retired, I currently teach a junior high class, a high school class, and substitute in grades 4 and 5. I do after school tutoring with students K - 12.
I write short stories for teaching on-line Reading Comprehension Classes
Have written short plays and helped direct plays with up to 30 students.
I have been a newspaper reporter and photographer covering school activities and sporting events.
I encourage students to have fun learning and to take ownership in their education.
I develop great rapport with students. I enjoy telling stories, cooking on a BBQ, and sports.
My philosophy: “No one can take away your education.”
I hear from kids and parents, “Teacher James, where do you get your energy?”
Homework Offered
Classes are two times a week: Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday (when possible-flexible). After the first class of the week the student has one full day to add to their story. After the second class of the week the student has several days to add to their story. If the student does not have time or is having a hard time adding to the story on their own---it is Okay. We will do it together in the next class.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
If the parent requests a letter grade I will gladly do so.
Grades Offered
I avoid scary, violent, vulgar language, and politically sensitive topics.
*If a special day or time is preferred, please let me know, and I will try to accommodate. Send message via Out School email.
Students are encouraged to lookup facts that they may want to include in their stories. Such as if they are writing about a trip to France: how tall is the Eiffel Tower? Where is the Arc de Triomphe? What sports do kids play in France? What are the people's favorite foods?
