Introduction to Creative Writing is an 8-week class where you are immersed in the world of Creative Writing! Learning all types of writing can help you to find your voice and learn where you shine! In order to do this, we have to learn many styles of writing. This is the perfect class to take a chance on yourself and learn what you love to write.

What to Expect: Each class has a new writing style to learn. By trying new writing styles you have a chance to find many ways to find your voice! Class layouts will be lecture-style mixed with writing time, discussion, and sharing our work. This class will not include a full workshop, but will have opportunities for peer and teacher feedback.

Weeks 1-6 will look as follows :
5 minute introductions, hellos, recap/what to expect
15-20 minute presentation on the writing style of that day.
15-20 minutes of writing time in class with teacher assistance
5 minute explanation of homework expectations

Week 7:
You should bring all of the work you have created to class.
We will spend this class putting together our writing portfolio, author's statements, and peer/teacher edits.
Each student will have a chance to share one piece of writing for workshop and feedback in this class.

Week 8:
Presentation day!
Everyone in class will have a chance to share their portfolio, read their author statement, and present one final piece to the class.

Between weeks 7 and 8 you are encouraged to send me your portfolio for feedback before the next class. This is not a requirement, but anyone who wants written feedback should send me their portfolio.

My teaching style: I love interacting with my students. Creative writing is a collaborative experience, though many think it is an independent practice. Most writers have or need a writer's circle with whom they can workshop, brainstorm, and talk.

I aim for an inclusive classroom, if your learner needs any type of accommodations please let me know so I can do my best to create the best learning atmosphere for them.

All students will be asked to share a creative piece of their choice. It can be from any day of the class. If someone decides they aren't comfortable sharing I will not force them; however, I will ask they send their work to me via Outschool.
Learning Goals
You will be introduced to 6 different styles of Creative Writing and be given a chance to practice writing pieces in each style. The goal here is to help you find a style of writing that fits you best! My goal is to help you find your creative voice

There are also many other skills a person learns when writing, such as confidence, self-expression, and bravery for sharing their work.

*I will be taking a break from Outschool beginning in 2024. If you send me a message or a class request I cannot promise you will hear back quickly. I am back in school for my MFA in writing. This will be my focus for a while. Thank you for understanding! Have a wonderful day!*

My name is Emalie and I consider myself a lifelong learner. This is why I pursued my BA in Creative Writing and Africana Studies, got my teaching certificate, and then decided to pursue my MA in English and Creative Writing.

The ability to help others find their creative voice is my passion! Creative Writing is where I shine as a teacher! I love helping young adults and children find a way to let their voices be heard. I am passionate about writing and teaching children and young adults to love expressing themselves through the written word.

Reading and Writing are a way to connect with the world and people around us. I hope to be a person who can foster your love of the English language and the written word.
