Class Experience

How do I write about real world events? In this one-time lecture and tutorial style class, students will learn how to write literary journalism essays – a form of creative nonfiction about true events. Unlike most writing students have done to this point, this type of writing requires research and reporting facts while weaving together a story that impacts the reader.

To build familiarity with this type of writing, we will focus on a person, place, event, experience, or idea and how to use literary devices such as dialogue, setting, characterization, and plot structure to develop an outline for a story. Students will be encouraged to finish the essay for homework and submit it for feedback.

This class focuses on a different topic each time it meets. Students are welcomed to re-enroll in the class to practice their creative nonfiction writing skills with different subjects. A progress report can be provided upon parent request.

Why should you take this class from me? In 2006, I wrote a story about healthy eating options on campus that went viral and since then I’ve been writing stories to inform and enlighten as a medical journalist. I’m also a published bestselling author, podcaster, and regular media contributor featured on Fox, CBS, NBC, ABC, eHealth Radio, The Brian Tracy Show, among others. Communicating news and information that changes people’s lives is a significant part of my career outside of the clinic and I’m here to teach you how to use words to make an impact.

As always, learning is fun when students participate and ask questions during the lessons! No prior knowledge of the subject matter is necessary. A curious mind is all that’s needed for success in this class.
