Students will learn about how to make a shape repeat in an aesthetically pleasing way using tessellations and will explore the works of M. C. Escher, one of the most famous tessellation artists of all time. Patterns are an important concept in math and can be lots of fun to learn. Students will choose a color scheme to create their piece of art. In this activity we will create basic tessellations using regular polygon shapes. A regular polygon is a 2-dimensional shape with equal sides and angles. We will start with a simple triangle to create our first tessellation. Students will need a couple of pieces of 8.5x11 inch paper (watercolor paper or thick sketchbook paper) and a ruler, as well as a couple of markers.
