Class Experience

Welcome to Creative Concepts: Unusual Picture Storytelling! In this class, students will be challenged to create a summative story of an unusual picture without any previous knowledge of the image topic.

To help get the creative juices flowing, we will start with a warm-up where students are shown a random image and give single words they could use to describe it (imaginative, magical, invention, nature, etc).

Next, all students will be presented with the same random picture and will be given a couple minutes to brainstorm and jot some ideas down. Then they will share their story orally with the class (around 5 sentences). Their peers will then have the chance to ask thought-provoking questions that offer a more complete explanation of the picture. The tricky part is to provide answers that are cohesive with the information already given. The questions are asked not to try to trip up the speaker, but to give the opportunity to think of more details that support their original story.

The format of this activity is highly discussion-based. It is a great chance to practice public speaking, creative thought, and improvisational skills. Both extroverts and introverts are welcome, I just ask that you be willing to share and contribute to a respectful and positive learning environment.

In this class, there are absolutely no wrong answers. In fact, the more unusual the explanation, the better! If you want to polish up on your "thinking outside the box" skills, this is the class for you!

Learning Goals

Students will learn to craft a story in a short time frame with a visual prompt and to add details by providing answers to teacher and peer questions. Students will practice public speaking skills with creative answers.

Hello wonderful parents and brilliant students! My name is Vanessa and I love teaching classes that foster and advance creative thinking. Creativity has been shown to increase problem solving skills and to enhance critical thinking. My classes are largely activity based and promote in-class discussion. Some of my classes focus on writing and others focus on speaking and story-telling. If your student like having fun and thinking outside of the box, my classes are the perfect match for you!

I have a Master's in Education and currently teach English online for multiple companies. I also offer private tutoring for non-native English speakers. It was there I discovered my passion for developing lesson plans that center around creativity and imagination. Based on the positive feedback from my students, I decided to develop classes centered around promoting creative thought.

In my classroom, there is no such thing as a wrong answer! Therefore, there is no reason to hold back from any crazy idea that may pop into your head. I aim to foster an environment where peers learn from each other, rather than just from me. I often find my students end up teaching me new things all the time!

I have a 1 year old son, and I'll have you know he is quite the social media fanatic. Follow him on instagram to see all the shenanigans he gets up to! His instagram handle is @mr_steal_yo_bottle and let me tell you, it is very fitting. I also have a small white dog and they are partners in crime! And by partners in crime, I mean the baby hasn't quite figured out that he is not a stuffed animal. It's a work in progress...
