In dance, it is beneficial to explore a balance between structure and free form. This style of dance can cultivate powerful movement that effortlessly flows through the body and stimulates the creative mind. We will warm up at barre (wall, chair countertop, etc.), exploring how expansive and fluid the body can feel while using strong technique. Once we move to center, we will focus more on traveling (given the space you are moving in) and using the body as fully as possible, expressing ourselves through dance. While in this class, I hope you discover more ways to move and flow through the space honestly and with total freedom to explore your individual movement.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to incorporate different textures in ballet as well as utilizing their full potential as movers in a more structured technique.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This is a very physical class and could result in injury. The students are encouraged to warm up prior to class and should also have plenty of water on standby during the session. The student should have enough open room around them to move comfortably. I do not require any special footwear, I do recommend ballet slippers, socks, or bare feet.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi there! My name is Maddy. I teach different styles of dance like ballet, modern/contemporary, choreography, and improv; all ranging from beginner-advanced. I am interested in bringing out the artistry and creativity inside of the mover all while focusing on technique to keep the physical body safe and strong.
I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in May of 2020 from the University North Carolina School of the Arts majoring in Contemporary Dance. I am currently a substitute teacher at Arts Based School for Creative Movement, and teach dance at a couple local studios.
I believe it is important to let the creative mind blossom while also exploring different ways the body can move. I will focus on creating a safe space for students to explore their movement and express themselves using dance. It's important to me to have an open communication with my students during and/or after class. I love to explore questions, try new things, and continue to have an open dialogue with students to ensure they are getting the full experience in my class, as well as learning as much as possible.
I am a HUGE dog lover and look forward to seeing some of my student's pets in class as well as introduce my own!
