Creating a Sketchbook Habit: Visual Journaling & Creativity
Class experience
Students will learn about why having a creative habit is so important for artists and how to begin to incorporate this into their lives. Students will be given an abundance of prompts and ideas to get them interested and motivated to work in their sketchbook. Each session will concentrate on a journaling technique or a compilation of several small techniques. Students will practice this technique in their sketchbooks and begin to work on the "project" (sketchbook prompt) for the week. ...

I am a fine artist and just like exercising, playing the piano, or playing a sport...practice is important! The most successful artists include creative daily habits into their lives. Often, these creative exercises lead to the creation of an artwork. In this course, I will help students to find inspiration for a regular sketchbook habit.
Homework Offered
Students will need to complete their weekly assignments prior to the next class. This should take less than one hour per week. Students will also be required to respond to posts on the Outschool classroom page. These will not exceed two posts per week.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will self-assess their work and will participate in verbal and written critiques of their classmate's work via the Outschool classroom page.Grades Offered
Students will need: Sketchbook or Notebook, #2 pencil, sharpener, white vinyl eraser, colored pencil - 24-count or higher - Crayola is good quality and affordable, fine sharpie, ultra-fine sharpie. These materials can be purchased for $10-$20 total at a big box or art supply store. Optional (not needed, but great to bring to class if you already have them in your art supplies): watercolor or watercolor pencils, colored permanent markers, white acrylic paint, ruler, stencils, interesting natural objects Students will be provided with project instruction sheets, example photos, and practice activities via digital files.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
