Class Experience

* Students will learn how to calculate perimeter of squares and rectangles
* Students will learn how to find the length of a missing side given the perimeter and length of another side
* This class will move from direct instruction, to practice, to application
* This class will be very interactive with short bits of instruction and lots of time given for students to practice and apply the concepts
* Instruction will be given through whiteboard drawings and a Powerpoint presentation used to help students see different parts of the zoo that we are building
* This class will focus on applying the math concepts that students learn which is critical for students understanding and remembering concepts

Learning Goals

3rd Grade Common Core Math Concept MD.D.8
Solve real world and mathematical problems involving perimeters of polygons, including finding the perimeter given the side lengths, finding an unknown side length, and exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters.

4th Grade Common Core Math Concept MD.A.3
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems.

5th Grade Common Core Math Concept MD.C.5.B
Apply the formulas V = l × w × h and V = b × h for rectangular prisms to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with whole-number edge lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems.
