Are you hearing more and more about Artificial Intelligence and the tools that are available to use for free or for a small monthly fee? Are you interested in introducing some of the latest AI tools to your child in a safe, family-friendly, and participatory environment? I believe that Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and it will become as much a part of children's lives as smart phones and social media have become. Therefore, I offer this class to introduce some of the latest technology to young people so that they can learn responsible uses of these fun and powerful tools. I am a published author on AI, I use AI tools in my businesses, and I researched the experiences of people who use AI at work for my doctoral dissertation. In this class I give an overview of two of the leading AI tools available, Chat GPT and Midjourney, to: - Explain how both tools can be used - Contrast the differences - Demonstrate both tools - Take inputs from the students to see what the tools will generate during the class - Speak about the ethical responsibilities of those who use AI tools It will be an educational and fun time where I will spend a few minutes to explain what AI stands for and the elementary basics of how AI tools work. Then, I will ask each student for 1) a kind of animal, 2) an activity, and 3) a place. For the remainder of the class, we will use AI tools to create short fairy tales and some AI-generated cartoon images based on those three things. For example, "a turtle playing soccer at the beach". At the end of class, I will send a copy of the stories and the pictures to the students for them to keep. I hope that each student will bring at least one idea to run through the tools because they will enjoy the experience much more if they actively participate. No experience is required at all.
Learning Goals
Students will be introduced to two leading AI tools by observing how they work. Students will participate by giving ideas for the instructor to simulate on his screen-share.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The AI tools that I will demonstrate already comply with strict policies that ban content that is inappropriate for children. However, I also reserve the right to judge whether any ideas suggested by the students may be too sensitive because this class is meant to be a safe environment for everyone.
Parental pre-approval is required for this class since I will screen-share from third-party websites from my computer (see below for specific website details). As such, no licenses nor accounts are needed for students to participate. The instructor will be the only person using live accounts as demonstration tools during the class.
