Class Experience

••• Please note learners must have a touchscreen tablet with the free “Scratch Jr.” app downloaded before class starts •••

Does your child love Minecraft? Do they have a preference for building toys like Lego, magnet tiles or marble runs?
This is the perfect class to get young builders interested in the creative world of coding.

In this one-time introductory class learners will be introduced to the concept of computer coding. We will use basic functions to build a fun project in an app called Scratch Jr. This app is specially designed for young children who can not yet read.
By snapping together color coded blocks of prewritten code, kids can create moving pictures or games. Scratch Jr provides a way for the very young to grasp foundational coding skills. Your child can use these skills to learn more complicated coding languages later in life.

This class is for young beginners with no experience coding, but your child should be familiar with using a tablet computer (iPad)

See the “materials” section below for more information on downloading the app.

Class will include:

- introductions and sharing our favourite ways to use computers
- discuss the concept of coding
- how to open and use the Scratch Jr. app
(this needs to be downloaded before class)
- step-by-step instructions of how to add a background and moving creatures
- several “body breaks“ where we stand up and play movement games connected to the lesson.

** This is an introductory class for beginners with no experience. Follow up classes will be available soon.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Kara.

I have been a professional childcare provider for over 20 years. My work experience has been centered around children 0-8 years old. I’m the mother of an intelligent, curious 5 year old with endless amounts of energy. I love to share new things with young children and see them get excited about the world!

I have been trained in the Montessori and Orton-Gillingham teaching methods. The main thing I’ve taken away from this training is to have respect for each child’s unique abilities and work with their interests and strengths.

My goal as a teacher is to make learning fun, engaging and useful. My style is to plan fun games, directed play or projects that promote learning and problem solving. I also like to encourage kids to think for themselves, to question information, to work together as a group. In these ways I hope to support a child’s natural curiosity and foster a love of learning.

The feedback I get most from parents is that I am patient and that their children feel comfortable with me. I don’t put on a show or use a super exaggerated voice in my class, thats just not my style. What I will do is work hard to connect with your child and make class time interesting and memorable.

I am a big fan of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) as well as storytelling. Most of my lessons will incorporate these subjects because I am passionate about them!

On a personal note, I live in Vancouver, Canada surrounded by ocean and mountains. I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to have seen many amazing places. At home I enjoy puzzles and playing strategy games.
My son and I spend a lot of time drawing together, building Lego and telling stories. For a small family of 3, we own way too many books, video gaming systems, and nerdy movie trilogies.
