Create Mindful Art for Beginners: Relaxing Drawing Exercises to Find Our Calm

Class Experience

Art is such a relaxing hobby. So much that even doodling can help you concentrate and calm down when you feel stressed.  This ongoing course will help students learn different drawing styles and techniques to practice new ways to relax, draw and doodle mindfully.  While learning ways to relax, students will also pick up on the art elements in a low-stress atmosphere. 

Students will use a blank page to explore their artistic abilities and draw meditatively in a relaxed environment. I will urge the students to be mindful through their creative process by allowing them to be independent in their chooses while having an instructional format.  The goal with the find the moment and while taking the path of least resistance as they draw. 

The weekly activities in class could include but are not limited to:
Week 1: Opt Art of Your Hand (Shading and Space)
Week 2: Doodle Tangle Pattern Panda (Contour Lines) 
Week 3: Inspired By Music (Intuitive Art Exercise)
Week 4: 5/23/21: "I am"...Affirmation Bunny (Illustration & Self-Reflection)
Week 6: 5/30/21:  Continuous Line Drawing (Observational and Intuitive Exercise)
Week 7: 6/7/21:   Layers of Holes (Shading and Value)
Week 8: 6/14/21:  Thankful Llama Clouds (Illustration & Self-Reflection)
Week 9: 6/21/21:  Listen to Your Heart, Penguin. (Illustration & Self-Reflection) 

Each portion of the class is established to help your child take chances, draw mindfully in a meditative way, and share their time and thoughts with others. 

It is a safe place where your child can find a moment to explore their artistic ability.  

In the class, we will: 
- Introduction
- Activity Explanation 
- Let's Mindfully doodle to Music Together (Independently or Together)
- Show / Process Each Piece (volunteer - so not required) 
- Say our Good-Bye's

Students will have the opportunity to:
- learn some basic to intermediate techniques for drawing
- learn to be accepting of challenges in different techniques with a compassionate inner voice
- learn to use mindfulness as a way to understand that artistic voice
- learn from one another collaboratively and ask questions
- learn to accept getting messy and making mistakes as a way to experiment with finding their voice 
- learn art fundamentals and drawing topics such as value, shading, texture, and  perspective

A blank page can serve as a vast playing field for the brain. It allows kids to revise and improve upon creative thoughts and ideas. Students can use pencils, markers, crayons, and anything else to spark joy in the picture.  Students should use a blank piece of paper or a journal.  

We will draw in a doodling format so expect to get messy and making mistakes! We will learn together and celebrate our victories!
 
Some Things to Mention:
It's an ongoing class to help establish accountability, recognition, and peer support. You are not obligated to stay in the class, but please let me know your intention. Students can rejoin at any time without disruption.

There is no grade or judgment in the class. I ask that each student respect each other's time and input. The main objective is the draw until the timer is complete with compassion and without judgment.  All levels are welcome, but some experience with drawing may help the experience in the classroom. 

I do ask that students are not late. Unfortunately, I cannot admits students who are more than 10 minutes late because it is a time-sensitive activity. If you are late, we can transfer your child to another date; let me know of the requested transfer on the missed class day. 

For all classes' safety, I asked that all students who are not verified show their faces at the beginning of the class. Those who refuse will be placed in the waiting room or removed from the class.

Parental Guidance
You may want to discuss privacy issues ahead of class. I hope that students will share and be proud of what they create. While taking this class, if you find that your students can not think of good things to say about themselves, gently drop in suggestions. Please let me know of any accommodations I can do ahead of time for your students. If you suspect your student is in any crisis, please speak with their physician or seek help from a counselor.

My courses are usually aimed at complete beginners to drawing or anyone looking to explore a mindfulness practice in a different way. I provide a simple, step-by-step guide to drawing and doodling techniques. These techniques are mostly mindful drawing exercises that help people relax their minds, build creativity and connect to life. My students go from beginners to pro after learning how to doodle, sketch and draw manga-style anime characters in my classes.
