Class Experience

Does your student LOVE Roblox and need some help with their reading, comprehension, and ability to cite text-based evidence?
Look no further! As a balanced literacy-focused teacher, I know the value of students being able to accurately read non-fiction text. I also know the importance of giving reader's books and text that interest them. In grades 3-5, students begin reading to learn, rather than learning to read. This shift sometimes causes students to lapse in their reading when met with new text features often found in expository text.

In this one-time class, we will read an article all about Roblox.
Students will be asked low to high-level thinking questions.
To improve their comprehension, I will provide them with a mini-lesson on "how to be a text-talker".
When students answer a question using accurate text-based evidence, they will get to add squares to their graph.
With this graph in hand, students will not only have control over their Roblox-inspired design, but also take ownership of their learning and reading.

The skills learned in this class will transfer to any fiction or nonfiction literature.
I look forward to what your student creates and seeing their confidence grow!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello!

My name is Katelyn Pipes. Welcome to Outschool!

I teach a variety of classes, both education and extra-curricular based. I believe that learning is best done when we learn through PLAY and engage our natural learning modes (song, dance, kinetic, auditory, and language.) These learning modes help us learn and retain our new skills quicker. Every learner is different and each of us draw on these learning modes to adapt to new content. I love using songs, movement, and play to enhance my lessons and engage my students.

I have been teaching online for 3 years with VIPKID. I love my job and meeting new students in China and abroad. I also tutor K-3 students in math and reading, both online and in-person. My reading pedagogy is based on the Science of Reading. I love seeing my students grow and foster their love for reading through explicit, systematic instruction. I completed my Bachelor's of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Tarleton State University. I am a certified teacher in the State of Texas and am endorsed to teach Early Childhood through 6th grade and ESL. I am pursuing my Masters degree to become a Reading Specialist.

My husband and I have two daughters, Finley Rae (3 years old) and Elliott Mae (2 years old). We enjoy playing outside, dancing in our kitchen, and playing with sensory bins.

I hope you'll join me in the classroom soon! I know we will have a blast together and learn while playing.
