Students will learn about chloropleth maps and ArcGIS Online. I will demonstrate this by sharing my screen where I will make a map alongside them. We will then discuss as a class the variety of topics that can be shown with a chloropleth maps and some basic color theory (do certain colors work better than others for the topic that you are portraying?). The students will then get a chance to work on their own map displaying data of their choice from the Census data. They will share their screens so I can provide feedback and guidance on their maps. Students should have a basic understanding of computers and the Internet. Students should also know terminology of different map features such as: compass, legend, title, scale bar, etc.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what a chloropleth map is. Students will learn how to navigate ArcGIS Online and will make a basic chloropleth map using Census data. Students will also get an overview of map design standards and best practices.Other Details

Student must have a computer or laptop that is connected to the Internet. Student must also create an ArcGIS Online account (free public account, not the free trial) prior to starting the class. The website does work on tablets, but seems to glitch and work a little slower.
