Students will be given the tools and a template for creating an autobiography related to their foster care and/or adoption experience. We will start at the beginning. We will then go through some examples of biographies that have been written related to foster care experiences. There are two supplemental readings that I will suggest they read to get an idea of the type of biography they could write. Lastly, we will discuss the template that I will give them so they can create a story...
The student will learn how to use a template to describe their foster care placements, people in their lives, and their personal feelings. Journalling has been shown to be beneficial to mental health and writing a biography from these templates could also be helpful. The students will be inspired to document, in their words, about their placements, original home life, and parents - both foster and biological. Students will also write about family members who may have impacted their lives. The students will be able to take the template and utilize it to create a solid timeline of their personal story.
I'm a certified teacher who has had state/foster children in my classrooms. I have been a certified foster parent for over 10 years; I've adopted five children. In the 10 years, we had over 24 children come through our home - some staying over two years. I am also the support group leader for my foster parent church group. I even homeschooled some of my foster children temporarily. I have participated in monthly foster care Multidisciplinary Team Meetings, court dates, and termination of rights proceedings. We have always encouraged journaling as a way to be thankful, thoughtful, and methodical in our thinking and feelings. As a foster parent, I kept a journal for the children in my care. At the right time, those documents were turned over to either the new adoptive parent or the child. This class would allow the child to create their own thoughts and feelings in order. They will need support and guidance after the class is over. I will offer the tutoring sessions soon.
The entire class is a how-to class. Therefore, all of the actual work would be done after the class is complete. Their work is certainly optional. If they want to write their biography they can. If they choose not to, there is no penalty.
I will provide a template for the students to use to create their biography. This would be printed (multiple times if needed) from their printer and utilized to create their story.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
This class is for foster or adopted children. They may be writing about past experiences which may be unpleasant. My class is simply a how-to-write class. I'll focus on ways to research some of the placements, family members, etc. Choosing to research and actually write the biography would be their decision after the class is complete. They may want guidance beyond the initial class. This may be an opportunity to discuss the writings with their therapist or counselor. Future Plans: Look for a tutoring class called "Biography for Foster Children - tutoring" where I can assist them personally with their individual story.
