Intermediate Level
Notan is a Japanese term meaning balancing light and dark. Through the guided drawing process, students will learn how to use simple lines and shapes to create fun symbols of celebration in Kawaii style. My teaching style involves breaking the process down into smaller, easy-to-follow steps. I pace the class according to the needs of the students; if needed, I give fast finishers a break, allowing students who need more time to complete their work, the time to do so, and even then, finishing before class ends is NOT the objective. The examples in the picture are only suggestive; students may also request a particular favorite if time allows. My classes are intended to be fun, informative, and a safe place to take artistic risks and make mistakes--that is experimentation, which artists do all the time! At the end of class, students will be invited to share their creations no matter what their progress is. More detailed information regarding this class can be found in the syllabus.
Learning Goals
Students will learn what notan means
Students will create a colorful background for their notan
Syllabus
2 Lessons
over 2 WeeksLesson 1:
Introduction to Notan; Learn Wet-On-Wet Painting Technique
We will begin by painting the background in wet-on-wet watercolor technique, and set it aside to dry while discussing shapes to practice drawing. We will practice drawing those designs on "practice paper" and then cut out the shapes. These can be saved to trace onto black paper next week if desired.
Once the painting is dry, it is a good idea to press it flat under a stack of books, if possible, to make it easier to work with next week.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Create the Collage
We will review the processes from last week, and trace or draw designs on black construction paper.. We will cut out the designs, being careful not to lose any of the pieces, glue down the center, and then fit, flip and glue the pieces.
