If there's an idea that's been rattling around your head, and you've been wanting to get it out but just aren't sure how... then this is the perfect class for you. During our eight weeks together, you will learn everything you need to know about writing a novel, novella, or short story! Whether you've started writing, have a first draft, or are just in the "idea" phase, this class will help move you through the A through Z of story writing. Here is a weekly breakdown: Week 1: Idea...
Students will improve their writing skills (from basics to development and idea formation). Students will learn everything needed to write a compelling novel, novella, or short story, including character development, setting, plot, dialogue, descriptive language, and more. Students will learn writing practices published authors use in order to write more quickly and concisely. They will also develop their own writing routines and schedules.
In addition to my teaching career as a licensed intervention specialist, I have published five fiction novels through a pen name and written several others that are pre-publication.
Each week, students will be asked to practice the skills taught in class and apply those skills to their own stories. Students will be expected to write throughout the week as their homework. Expect to commit at least one hour each week to writing.
Students will need something to type in (I prefer Google Docs or Microsoft Word). They may also want to have pencil and paper for brainstorming, ideas, and notes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will not be formally assessed in this class. Students may submit any or all of their assignments for detailed feedback, however it is not required.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
