Class Experience

Students will improve their understanding of the basics of English grammar and be able to use common, grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues to the meaning of a word, identify different types of sentences, the function of various phrases and clauses, and correct misplaced modifiers.
I am a middle and high school English teacher in Northern California. Last year, I noticed my "brick and mortar" students struggling on the grammar section of standardized tests, despite being perfectly capable of writing grammatically-correct sentences. It boiled down to the fact they knew the correct way to write a sentence, but didn't know the name for various aspects of grammar which is what the tests are looking for. This year, I utilized the materials in this course in my classroom. Within a few weeks, their scores on the grammar quizzes (included in this course) improved and then their scores on the standardized tests improved as well.

The continued return to and review of skills previously taught while also introducing new skills helps contribute to the success and confidence of students.
Students are expected to complete the worksheet before class and have it read to go. We will go over the worksheet together, make any corrections, and answer any questions that come up.
Worksheets for each day will be provided. Ideally, students will print these out and write directly on them for their own notes.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
There will be four quizzes each week which serve as a way for students to see their progress. These quizzes will be averaged together at the end to show a mastery percentage.
2 hours 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
