Crash Course: Fine-Tuning Math Skills for 5th and 6th Graders

This class is a follow-up to my 5th grade or 6th grade math classes. Students will review and fine-tune math skills noted as a problem in class by both parents and teacher. Games, slides, guided practice, and virtual manipulatives will be used to encourage mastery. Topics to be covered: (schedule of topics is subject to change based on parent request and/or teacher recommendations) Week 1: Division/Multiplication of whole numbers and decimals Student will practice multiplication and division, and review proper decimal placement. Week 2: Simplifying Fractions Students will use Greatest Common Factor and Prime Factorization to simplify fractions. Week 3: Decimals as Fractions Student will review the meaning of decimals and fractions as an understanding of the relationship between the two is reinforced. Week 4: Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers Students will practice finding improper fractions for mixed numbers as well as the reverse. Simplifying will be included and virtual manipulatives will be used to reinforce understanding. Week 5: Fraction Computation (addition/subtraction) Students will practice finding common denominators using the Least Common Multiple. Week 6: Fraction Computation (multiplication/division) Students will practice the algorithm for each.
