This 30,000 years ago! But why does it matter? Who cares about old stuff? In this class, we will take a look at some of the best-known works of prehistoric art and discover where art began and why we still learn about it today.

Class Experience

This is class #1 of art history 101. We begin at the beginning considering the things left behind by Neanderthals and prehistoric man. Art and creation have always been important and in this class, we'll consider some of the reasons why creativity began to be expressed. From sculptured and carved artifacts to painted caves and scratched stone designs. Art history begins over 30,000 years ago. We'll see items from Africa, Europe, North America, and Australia. We'll consider ancestry and human migration out of Africa and why you should care about Prehistoric art today. Is there a difference between art and artifact?. Is this simply anthropology? Teacher expertise and credentials
I teach art history to college students. This is where it begins and I hope to show students where art and anthropology cross, that even really, really, really old art is interesting and exciting. I have masters degrees in art history and anthropology.
