Functions and Linear Equations is a focused four-session program designed to strengthen students' grasp of essential Algebra I concepts related to graphing and functions. This course helps students build a strong understanding of how to work with linear equations, interpret functions, and calculate and apply slope. Each 60-minute session is filled with interactive lessons, problem-solving, and engaging examples that connect math to real-world situations. This course is perfect for students looking to solidify their understanding of these key topics or for those preparing for more advanced algebra. Students will learn to: Understand the definition and notation of functions. Graph linear equations and identify their characteristics. Calculate and interpret the slope of a line. Write equations of lines from various forms of data (e.g., points or a graph). What topics will you cover? Each session starts with a brief warm-up to review previous material and prime students for the new content. This is followed by a direct instruction segment where I explain and demonstrate new concepts with step-by-step examples. The main portion of the class includes guided practice with active participation from students, as well as collaborative problem-solving activities. We wrap up with a class discussion, a summary of key points, and time for questions to reinforce understanding. I teach using a combination of direct instruction, interactive discussions, and visual aids such as slides and live whiteboard illustrations. I incorporate real-life examples to make abstract concepts more relatable and use collaborative problem-solving exercises to engage students in their learning. My teaching style is supportive and student-focused. I break down complex ideas into manageable steps and encourage active participation to make sure each student feels confident and included. I prioritize an environment where learners are comfortable asking questions, exploring ideas, and sharing their problem-solving strategies. Positive reinforcement and constructive feedback are central to my instruction. Learners will have frequent opportunities for interaction throughout each session. I encourage questions during direct instruction, facilitate discussions during guided practice, and create collaborative problem-solving activities where students can share their approaches and learn from each other. The structure of the class ensures that each student is actively engaged and receives individualized support as needed. By the end of Crash Course 2, students will have a deeper understanding of functions, linear equations, and slope, which are essential components of Algebra I. This knowledge will not only boost their math confidence but also prepare them for more advanced topics in future courses.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Virginia Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
I am a certified middle school math teacher with over five years of experience teaching math to students aged 11-14. I currently teach at Henrico Virtual Academy within Henrico County Public Schools, where I have spent the last four years developing and delivering comprehensive math instruction in both in-person and virtual formats. My expertise includes teaching Algebra I, pre-algebra, and geometry, with a strong focus on making these foundational math concepts accessible and engaging.
I have designed and implemented standards-aligned curricula that meet the Common Core requirements, ensuring students build a solid mathematical foundation. Additionally, I regularly create and use assessments to evaluate student progress and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs. My background in remote teaching has honed my ability to effectively engage students through interactive lectures, discussions, and digital tools, fostering an environment where students can confidently develop their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
I am committed to continuous professional development and regularly participate in math education workshops and training sessions to stay updated with best practices and innovative teaching strategies. My goal is to help students see math as both a practical tool and an exciting subject that they can master with the right guidance and support.
