2-4 hours per week. After the first session, there will be a homework assignment. This will involve a structured approach to practicing their newly-acquired personal journey self-reflection skills. Students are expected to complete this on their own for a duration of 45-60 minutes. After the second session, another homework assignment will be assigned. Students are expected to complete this on their own for 60-90 minutes. This will involve writing their own outline and/or draft of an essay. Your student will have the option of sharing their work during the final class. Sharing will be completely optional.Class Experience

Taught either 1-on-1 or in very small groups (depending on enrollment), this class offers EXCELLENT value. START HERE! Multiple course times are offered, including after-school time slots. NOTE: Completion of this foundational course is highly recommended for your student to continue working with Ms. Rena in future 1-on-1 college essay review sessions. Designed by a knowledgable and accomplished Harvard graduate, this course will help your student learn how to up-level their writing. Students will learn and practice the cornerstone skills needed to crisply communicate their personal narrative to the people and organizations that matter most. NOTE: Ms. Rena offers a private, 1-on-1 option for this three-part course - click "Request a Private Class" or message her for details. Private classes are the best choice if you want valuable customized attention for your learner. Ms. Rena also offers guaranteed 1-on-1 writing coaching sessions here on Outschool (general, Common App, and UC PIQ versions available) that will be helpful to your learner after completion of this foundational course. FIRST CLASS MEETING OVERVIEW (70 mins): - WHO: Introductions and goals. - WHY: Why being able to craft a compelling personal essay is one of the most important skills they could develop as they enter young adulthood. - HOW: A structured, step-by-step approach for self-reflection in order to discover what has shaped their personal journey the most. - PRACTICE: Guidance given for homework assignment. SECOND CLASS MEETING OVERVIEW (70 mins): - WHAT/HOW: Teaching essay-writing building blocks - a logical yet engaging approach to one or two types of writing. - HOW: Work on an example of how to structure an essay outline in real-time. - PRACTICE: Instructions for homework activity to prepare before final session. THIRD CLASS MEETING OVERVIEW (70 mins): - PRACTICE: Interactive review of the outlines and/or essays your students have worked on. Constructive feedback will be given. Sharing these outlines and/or essays with the class is optional. - HOW: Review of sample essays and critique/learning in context. - HOW: Final reminders and tips on what it takes to write a great personal essay. - Q&A: Your student's time to ask any questions about personal essay writing that may remain.

Students will be asked to consider things like life challenges they have experienced. This will be for the purposes of pre-essay self-reflection. It is NOT mandatory to share anything they don't want to share with the class. Remember to keep private info private.
