This class is a discovery class where the only academic requirement is a passion for learning and creating. We will use household materials to build the projects. In this online live course, each student will: - Participate in a class with other children his/her age group (7 - 9) discovering how the engineering process is a part of everyday life - Enjoy four hours of personalized project-based instruction and interest-based projects. - Learn to design, build, create models using household materials that will require an engineer's eye using everyday household materials. - Collaborate with small groups (6 students maximum per session) with one adult certified live instructor. Syllabus/Topics covered: Day 1 (Force & Motion) - Work - Force and Motion - Design a Balloon Car Day2 (Energy Conservation) - Energy - Types of Energy - Design your own Catapult Day3 (Simple Machines) - Simple Machines - Friction - Design your own pulley, inclined plane, and screw Day4 (Rube Goldberg) - Review of Force, Energy, and the different simple machines discussed - Introduce Rube Goldberg - Design and Create your own Rube Goldberg Machine The 60 minutes classes are incredibly interactive: 10-minute lecture using videos and slides. 40-minute self-paced creation. 10-minute discussion of achievements.
Learning Goals
Engineers play an essential role in our everyday lives, from designing reliable transportation means to simply aiding our Earth clean.
In our Engineering class, students will learn about engineers' roles and how their designs contribute to everyday life.
Students will put on their engineering caps and test their abilities by creating different projects related to the engineering field discussed for the day.
Students will learn that being an engineer starts as a model and will create model designs using everyday household items to complete projects.
With the instructor's guide, students will learn that they can be a part of the engineering process if they are willing to try.
