We will review the concept of equivalent fractions, which is needed in order to add or subtract fractions with different denominators. We will draw candy bars and pizzas and use manipulatives to model adding and subtracting fractions. Then we will learn the "secret code" which is the algorithm to find equivalent fractions, allowing the students to easily add and subtract them. The code is to find the least common multiple (LCM). Students should already know how to multiply and divide, as...
Students will be able to find equivalent fractions using a fraction strip. Students will be able to find equivalent fractions using the algorithm that multiplies or divides both the numerator and denominator by the same value to calculate an equivalent fraction. Students will understand that equivalent fractions must be found in order to add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Students will learn to find the greatest common factor (GCF) and least common multiple (LCM) to efficiently add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators.
1 file available upon enrollmentDry erase board and marker or Pencil and Paper Colored pencils or crayons to color a fraction strip handout that will be provided.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners will be informally assessed as the teacher asks questions to check for understanding.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
