Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
Beginner Level
People interact and communicate with each other through words, body language, actions, and personal appearance. Being aware of how and what is being communicated is important not only at home, but also at school, and in the homes of others. Social skills are not inborn, but need to be taught, practiced, and learned. Furthermore, different situations require different skills. This can leave children confused and uncertain when they discover behaviors that are acceptable at home, such as turning on the television or opening the refrigerator, are considered to be unacceptable, or even rude, at a friend's house. In this class for 2-4 learners, participants will listen to excerpts from "The Berenstain Bears Forget Their Manners" by Stan & Jan Berenstain read aloud to activate background knowledge. They will be given the opportunity to relate the content to their own lives through an engaging discussion, including interaction with another “learner”, Katie, the puppet! Learners will also participate in an object lesson and discuss behaviors that are considered to be courteous, or polite, and crass, or rude, at home, at school, and in the homes of others. Learners will be encouraged to be polite, but assertive, and to think critically as they observe, analyze, and problem-solve given Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) scenarios to increase self and social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship skills.

This class is taught in a structured learning environment that is visually appealing and free from distractions. Students are encouraged to participate in the interactive activities and will be provided with additional learning support as needed.
