Counting in Korean With Native and Sino-Korean Numbers

Let's count in Korean! Did you know, Korean had two number systems? Native Korean numbers are unique to the Korean language and are used for telling the hour, your age, and counting items. Sino-Korean numbers come from Chinese and are similar to numbers in Chinese and Japanese. They are used to talk about money, minutes and seconds, phone numbers, and anything that it over 100. In this class we will have two days to learn each of the number systems. We will learn up through 20 in Native Korean numbers and up through 100 in Sino-Korean. When you learn the first 10 of Sino-Korean numbers, the rest through 100 are easy! We just put them together in a pattern like 10+1, and 10+2 for the teens, then at twenty it is 2 tens + one and so on through 99.

Day 1 we will focus on the Native Korean numbers through 20. We will count objects, read a book with counting, and practice how to say our age in Korean.

Day 2 we will focus on Sino-Korean numbers through 100. We will say fake phone numbers, read money amounts, do some math, and talk about dates.

After each class, a document will be posted with pronunciation guides so students can continue to practice the numbers.
