Class Experience

****IMPORTANT NOTE***

***This class is a sequel to 'The Art and History of Costume Design' class I offer. It is highly recommend that students take that class first before taking this one, so they may have a better grasp of the concepts, vocabulary, and topics we discuss.***

In this class, students will learn how to make designs specific to sci-fi and fantasy worlds. There will be a self driven project they work on individually, to create their own costumes of either sci-fi or fantasy genre. The choice of which is up to the student themselves, as is what medium they want to gear their design towards (ie. is it for animation, live action, etc.)

We will take concepts we discussed in 'The Art and History of Costume Design', and put them and our imaginations to work for one week, to create a final product the students themselves will be proud of.

The first two days will be, what I call "idea building" days. We will discuss, in depth, several examples and designs of sci-fi and fantasy costumes respectively.

The next two days, will be workshop days. Students will decide what they want to create, and I will help them along in the process of mood board building, concept sketching, and finally, coloring. These topics are discussed in 'The Art and History of Costume Design', and we will go further in depth in this class.

The final day will consist of a group showcase, where students will show off their work, and be able to communicate their concepts and ideas through their final costume design and mood board.

Learning Goals

Students will become more confident in the 'sketching' process. Meaning, they will develop a comfortability of connecting their pencil to their brain and learn to communicate their creativity more effectively through the pencil. They will also learn more about the professional world of costume design, what their strengths are, and some things they may be able to improve upon.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a 2020 graduate of USF, with a BFA in Illustration for Animation (Studio Art) with a minor in Creative Writing and certificate in Art History. I taught and privately tutored middle school students in person for about a year at Lighthouse Christian Academy in both art and science. Having classroom experience with kids has helped me learn how to connect, communicate, and teach them successfully.

In addition to teaching art, I also love connecting with students on science as well. I taught both subjects for 2 years and grew up with a passion for both!

I hope to share my love of art and science with my students, as well as show them how to make a careers for themselves in these fields.
