Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
In this eight week course, learners will gain a foundation in the field of cosmology. We will explore the current understanding and mysteries of our universe.

Cosmology is a field within the space sciences which focuses on the origins, continual evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. We will explore the field starting with an understanding of the fundamental interactions and particles, moving all the way out to the large scale structures of the observable universe and beyond.

We will investigate questions such as:

What is the difference between cosmology and astronomy?
How can we know about the early universe?
What is the difference between dark matter and dark energy?
What is the cosmic background radiation?
Could there be a multiverse?
What evidence is there for the Big Bang?

This course is intended for leaners with a deep interest in space. While it is not a requirement, it is suggested that students have taken a space course with me (or in another context) before or have self-taught knowledge in the area. No previous background in physics or higher math is necessary!

This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged.
Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity.

Optional videos and additional material will be posted in the classroom between live meetings.

Week 1 – Introduction
Week 2 – Quantum Mechanics, Matter, Energy, and Spacetime
Week 3 – The Big Bang
Week 4 – Dark Energy
Week 5 – Dark Matter
Week 6 – Large Scale Structures
Week 7 – The Multiverse
Week 8 – The Fates of the Universe
