Cosmic Constellations - Explore the Night Sky
Class experience
Have you ever wondered how the stars can make pictures in the sky? In this astronomy class, we'll learn about how ancient cultures used constellations, as well as the science behind the stars! We'll begin by looking at a virtual planetarium of stars, comparing which parts of the sky are visible to each learner at different times of the year. Then we'll look at the Greek and Roman constellations, as well as several other cultures, and discuss how ancient people used the night sky for...
Students will define what a constellation is and name some examples from the night sky that is visible to them. Students will explain how the view of the sky changes during the year as a result of Earth's revolution around the Sun. Students will discuss how ancient people used the night sky for navigation, keeping track of seasons, and storytelling. Students will create a model of the Big Dipper that represents the relative distance of its stars.
I teach this content at the American Museum of Natural History and greatly enjoy sharing my love of astronomy with students!
Students will be making a 3-D model of the Big Dipper asterism. Supplies needed: -An 8.5 x 11-inch piece of cardboard (such as the top of a shoebox or side of empty cereal box) -Black thread or yarn (another color is OK if you don't have black) -Aluminum foil, cut into seven 6-inch squares -Tape -Ruler -Printed copy of the Big Dipper map, provided by instructor -Black construction paper (optional) -Pencil to mark the stars on your black construction paper (optional)
