Beginner Level Good Skin Knowledge for Youth Education In this class, through visual slides and group discussions, students will learn the facts about common skin, hair, and nail conditions. Misunderstanding can lead to teasing and bullying, which can be associated with anxiety and depression. By Learning and understanding together, we start to build more confidence. Some examples of discussion topics in this ongoing class we will learn about but not limited to: What is acne? Name at least two types of pimples. Understand the three main components of a pimple (oil, dead skin cells, bacteria). What is the recipe for acne? Do I have acne? Learning that acne is not something that people choose to have. We will discuss the challenges of having acne. Acne: Myths and truths Identify at least three acne myths and provide explanations for them. Acne treatments Do you know what not to do if you have pimples? Is there anything you should avoid? Media and retouching Illusion of digital technology. Discuss media and the use of retouching. Recognize that the images seen in magazines do not always reflect reality. Our skin self-esteem Discuss the way self-esteem affects young people. Discuss confidence in relation to bullying about skin health. Skin: Introduction Understand and identify the term “epidermis”. Explain at least 3 different functions of the skin. Learn three ways to take care of skin. Skin: Skin types What is my skin type? Tips for washing our face correctly. Brief description of each skin type. Skin: Eczema and Psoriasis Explanation about how the immune system relates to eczema and psoriasis. Discuss what a trigger is. Learn that eczema and psoriasis are not contagious. Skin: Warts and fungus Learn where warts can appear on the body. Learn ways to prevent getting athlete’s foot. Recognize that a dermatologist is a skin doctor. Learn about ways to prevent skin fungus. Learn about how skin fungus does not make you dirty. Hair care and shaving Learn the steps for washing hair. Identify the proper way to shave. Discuss whether a person shaving, straightening, or curling their hair matters. Hair care: Hair loss Identify three reasons people lose hair. Learn that hair loss can happen to anyone. Express their feelings about hair loss and how to treat those who are losing their hair. Hair care: Lice Learn that being “dirty” is not why people get lice. Learn what can be used to treat lice. Define what a “nit” is. Nail care: Complications Identify three main parts of the nail. Learn about examples of nail complications. Learn about ways to take care of our nails. Healthy sun habits: Protection and sunscreen Learn about ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Learn what two different things on a sunscreen label mean. What gives skin its color? Learn that melanin gives skin color. Learning that the amount of melanin is what makes skin darker or lighter. Tanning Learn why tanning beds are dangerous. Learn alternatives to tanning beds. Recognize the difference between UVA and UVB rays. Freckles and sunburn Learning about why people get freckles and sunburns. Learn that our skin gets freckles and/or a suntan to protect our skin from the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays. Tools and implements used by skin care professionals. I would be happy to answer any questions you might have. *Students do not require any experience or knowledge in Cosmetology to take this class.
