In four classes spread over four weeks, the students will engage in a narrative adventure following Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery expedition during the years 1803 through 1806. Using roleplaying-game-style character creation, students will play members of the expedition crew and will be presented with various challenges and tasks that represent what the expedition actually faced. Students will work together to make decisions about what actions their characters should take at various points, and will use roleplaying-game dice to learn the outcomes of those decisions. Week 1: The narrative will cover 1803: the commission of the Corps of Discovery; the recruitment of crew members and building of vessels; the gathering of supplies; and the building of Camp Dubois, the launch point of the expedition. Week 2: The narrative will cover 1804: the keelboat trip along the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains through Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota; interactions with the Lakota and Mandan tribes; the joining of Charbonneau and Sacagawea; and the construction of Fort Mandan Week 3: The narrative will cover 1805: the trip to the Yellowstone River and Montana; interactions with the Shoshone tribe and Sacagawea's brother; the snowy struggle of the Bitterroot Mountains and interaction with the Nez Perce tribe; the travel through Idaho, Oregon, and Washington using the Columbia River; the reaching of the Pacific Ocean and the construction of Fort Clatsop Week 4: The narrative will cover 1806: the return home, including splitting into multiple smaller expeditions and Sacagawea joining the Mandan with her son
