English language arts can seem like a heavy list of standards, grammar rules and correct spelling, and for this reason, I want to lighten things up and remind learners that it can also be quite fun. This class puts the "art" back into English language arts, and helps learners tap into their creativity while learning poetic writing techniques. We will use our words as the artistic medium to create concrete or shape poems (calligrams). Learners will be coached through a brainstorming and planning exercise around the theme of Autumn or Harvesttime. Learners will receive a brief slideshow about the significance of the cornucopia for this theme, as well as poetic techniques such as imagery and figurative language that they can use for their own project. Learners will be guided in writing their own poems and then using teacher-provided templates to shape the words. Learners will have the opportunity to share their completed projects at the end of class.

My love for creative writing began at an early age, as I started composing my own poems and stories. As I grew, I learned to rely on language arts skills as the building blocks of a happy career as a freelance writer for over 20 years. For three of those years, I also worked full-time as an associate editor, which helped me gain real-world expertise in the nuances of English language arts. I am walking the language arts journey with my three children while homeschooling them, as well as with several other online students in various grades. I hope to not only teach, but also inspire and encourage learners to love English language arts as much as I have. I look forward to connecting with you through this class!
