Students will perform three chemistry experiments that use copper pennies.
Class experience
In this one-time class, three chemistry experiments will be presented that use copper pennies. The experiments use pennies before and after 1982 (see materials for additional details). The first experiment will explore the dark tarnish on pennies and chemical reactions that remove the tarnish. The second experiment will form blue malachite on copper pennies, and the third will use copper pennies to coat steel paper clips with copper.
